Great Qualities to Have

This week I was invited to give a talk to a group of young motivated designers. I chose to talk about the attributes that a designer should have.
After giving the lecture, I realized that these are the traits that all of us should have for life.

  • Listen: Stay open to ideas, feedback, and answers. A person who listens is one who accepts suggestions and is willing to change his views and actions.
  • Accept Criticism: It allows you to learn and grow.
  • Stay Humble: Do not brag about your achievements; let modesty be your drive and accomplishment be your impact.
  • Have Integrity: Stay honest, stick to your principles. Do what you know is right.
  • Take Risks: You have the opportunity to create unique directions. Leave your comfort zone!
  • Seek Excellence but not Perfection: Perfection is unforgiving and inflexible. Excellence is an attitude; is forgiving, allows you fail and improve.
  • Collaborate: Be willing to share ideas and concepts. Have a horizontal understanding between disciplines. Everyone has a different set of skills.
  • Simple Ideas: Create concepts easy to understand. Creativity is making the complicated simple.
  • Stay Real: People will listen and believe in you!
Great qualities to have…

Accept, Cope then Adapt

Tonight I am sitting at one of my restaurants. It is Friday night, we have plenty of table reservations, we are fully staffed, just finished giving the staff a great pep talk and we are ready.
It is going to be a great night!
Or not?
Surprise, surprise, the forecast is calling for rain and snow to start at 6 pm. That is the start of our evening for business.  The storm was supposed to arrive Saturday morning. Too bad, now It is going to be hard for people to come out; business will be slow.
We are overstaffed, and now, we will have to send some of them home early and prepare for tomorrow night. Hopping that the storm will be gone by then.

So here is the lesson:
Despite our plans, sometimes events occur that are completely out of our control and can turn our world upside down in a split second. These uncontrollable surprises are called circumstances.
The dictionary defines "circumstance" as an event that causes something to happen, typically something undesirable.
Yes, it is something undesirable, but I see a circumstance as an event that could be used as an opportunity.
If we refuse to accept our lack of power and control, our lives become an endless series of disappointments and frustrations.
On the other hand, if we accept our lack of power, cope (deal effectively) then adapt (modify for a new purpose), our lives become a series of opportunities.
It is important to understand where we end up in our life has less to do with our circumstances than with where we decide to go in spite of our circumstances.

Remember: Our real challenges are inside our mind, which is the only thing we can control. Once we understand and take ownership over how we think and react, we will be better off!

Today I am writing a blog for me
Often, I am stubborn and unwilling to listen to any advice.
So I decided to write about “Knowing it all.”
First, who is a person that believes they know it all?
A person who thinks he/she knows everything and dismisses the ideas, opinions, or suggestions of others.
A person who is quick to interrupt the actions and comments of others.
A person that attempts to correct others with his/her own views.
Yep, it sounds like me… hahaha
So here is advice to myself:
Listen to people with interest, pay attention, engage and identify with. Stay open to their ideas, feedback, and answers.
A person who listens is one who accepts suggestions and is willing to change his/her views and actions.
So, be a good listener and stay open minded.
Keep in mind: There's nothing wrong with listening to what another person has to say.

Peace out!

Today I learn the meaning of a formidable word, Stalwart.
To be a stalwartly person means to be loyal, reliable, and hard working. It means to be a trustworthy individual.
Wow, this is a powerful word…
In life we should all aim to be a STALWARTLY and trusted person!

You should not to rush into a decision…
Yet, there are times when you just need to make a decision, to go for it and trust your gut instincts.
Once the decision is taken the consequence is now out of your control. In fact, there's no changing the past, so forget about it and move on.
Keep in mind: Mistakes and successes are important lessons in life. Do not spend your days regretting or raving about them.

What is done is done!

Who I am today as a person is largely due to my failures!
Failures are the speed bumps in life that matter!  They are not regrets but small disappointments that wake up the strength within us! Failures are the process of learning and improving!  Without failures we simply are at a status quo!

"success is built on many failures..."
