March 20, 2013 our kids Teta, (grandmother in Arabic) passed away.
Unable to attend the funeral they decided to write a letter to Teta. I am sharing their letter because it demonstrates the immense love they have for Teta, their tremendous characters and formidable resilience! Dear Teta, We are very sad that you left this life as a young lady. We miss you but now we have another pair of eyes in the sky looking over us. You were a fantastic grandma who would do traditional grandmother things like; cook for us, knit, and love us. We have many great memories with you and we will never forget them. Here is a list of our cherished memories we had with you:
From Isabela: Teta I love you so much I hope you visit us and everybody that you love when you’re up there. I remember when we were very little we used to play with the casadas and dress up with them and make little houses for them with you like it was yesterday. Even though you were still young when you left us we still love you and I want you to know that everything happens for a reason. This morning I woke up and my dad came to me and sad he had bad news I didn’t know what he was going to say. He said that you passed away. At first I thought he was lying then I saw tears in his eyes and my sister came in crying I was sad but I had to be prepared. Now you know my dad loves you. Before we left to Washington D.C my dad sad to all of us we are going for two things to wake her up or to say goodbye. He was right we did go for one of those things but it wasn’t what we hoped for we got the worst. But I am not that sad because I know it happened for a reason and I know your still with us up there. We spend as much time with you as we could so I’m happy we did. I know your watching us because tonight there will be a very shiny star and that will be you looking over us. Teta I want you to know I love and will always love you. Love and kisses Isa A.K.A suf sufe! From Gabriel: Teta, you could make any one smile if they saw how much you cared for us. I was extremely sad when I heard your death but now I am gifted to write this letter to you. I know they say you are looking down on me but I am looking up to you. If I go through tuff times I will know you are watching and I can look up to you for advice. But on a happy note Jiddo is going to come live with us, and your back pain finally ended. I know you are up there laughing with me and I am proud to say I was with you at Alexandria Hospital. Thanks for having patience with us and letting us sleep at your house every Sunday. You and Jido really were the building blocks of my childhood. “Our dead are never dead to us, until we have forgotten them.” I hope I will never forget you. Thank You, and Goodbye. Gabriel From Daniela: Teta, I love you so much. I miss you so much, but I know you are now resting in peace. You are the best grandmother anybody could ever have. You have taught me so much and I love and will never forget all the memories we have together. I know you are watching me and I will always look up to you. I know you are relaxing now and have no troubles. I love you and I hope your doing well. You are a young lady to be in the heavens but I know something good comes out of something bad. Jiddo is going to be with us in Spain and Ecuador and we are going have a lot of fun with you. I know you are smiling with me. You are the best Teta in the world and Jiddo is the best Jiddo in the world. I love you both and I miss you. I didn’t want this to happen to you but everything in the world has a reason. I will never forget you as the best grandmother in the universe, not only the world. Love, Daniela or Dan Doune

For the past week I have not been able to focus and get motivated to write a blog… so I decided to use “Motivation” as the subject for this article.
Motivation is the reason for acting, is a desire, a willingness to accomplish something. As a young entrepreneur I used to work more than 16 hours a day. I was motivated to succeed and to earn money. At night I could not sleep because I was afraid that I would not be able to accomplish what I wanted. Now as an old entrepreneur I am still motivated, but money is not anymore my motivation; yes, I want to succeed but my motivation is to make changes, to create ideas and projects that will improve peoples lives. Ideas that will last long after I am gone. So how does motivation work? There are two types of motivation, Intrinsic and Extrinsic motivation: Intrinsic Motivation Intrinsic motivation means that the individual's motivational stimuli are coming from within. The individual has the desire to perform a specific task, because its results are in accordance with his belief system or fulfills a desire and therefore importance is attached to it. Our deep-rooted desires have the highest motivational power. Some of them are:
Extrinsic Motivation Extrinsic motivation means that the individual's motivational stimuli are coming from outside. In other words, our desires to perform a task are controlled by an outside source. Note that even though the stimuli are coming from outside, the result of performing the task will still be rewarding for the individual performing the task. Extrinsic motivation is external in nature. The most well-known and the most debated motivation is money. Most of us believe that motivation is based on a reward or punishment system. Daniel H. Pink says other wise in his book "Drive." He believes that humans need to control their own lives, learn and create and therefore do better in their world. The reward and punishment system may have worked in the past but now times have changed. Pink examines the three elements of motivation: Autonomy: it means that we all want to be in control of our lives Mastery: is the desire to get better in something that matters Purpose: is when we work towards something larger than ourselves _After learning about the different types of motivation I realized that as an old man that I have gone from extrinsic to intrinsic motivation, money is not the main reason I get involved in projects, my motivation is to create and teach people what I have learned through my successes and failures. Hopefully I can help cultivate a new generation with principles, strength, that will become and promote a positive impact in this world. To finish I am sharing a question that Daniel Pink asks himself every night before going to sleep… Why am I better today than I was yesterday? ![]()
It has been a week of sad news, so to bring the spirits up I decided to write about the wonderful things about life and reasons to be alive.
Where would I find a list of reasons? I decided to recruit my kids and nieces. I organized a nice dinner for them and gave them an important assignment… I asked them to write down on a note card their reasons to appreciate life. At first, I found a lot of resistance… “Hey, you are going to make us work for you… write your own blog”, “not now"… and so on... Finally they agreed to do it and began to get into the project. After writing their thoughts they had to give an oral presentation. Slowly everybody got in the momentum and a great discussion began… an hour later we were still exchanging ideas. Below are some of the great reasons that we came up to be thankful for:
When the walls begin to close in on you, take a break; stop and look beyond the immediate problem and appreciate the great things about life, then is when your immediate problem diminishes. If you have a chance to recruit somebody to remind you of the great things about life please do it! Do you have your reasons to appreciate life? |
