When my kids see me frustrated they frequently say: “Tranquilo (easy) Mauchy (my nickname), go with the flow.” Go with the flow…? So what do they mean by telling me to “go with the flow?” The dictionary defines it as not to be willing to push against prevailing behavior or norms, sometimes bowing to peer pressure; it means to not attempt to exert a large amount of influence on the course of events. Wow, “going with the flow” is an antithesis to everything that I promote in my writings. It means not to have a voice or character and to accept everything as you are told. I understand my kids when they tell me to go with the flow; what they are saying to me is: relax my friend; do not get so pumped up, let it go. I do agree with them, sometimes I should take a chill pill and go along... Yet, they should understand that “go with the flow” is the root for inactivity or inaction. It means to accept your situation. -To follow without questioning is wrong... Always understand why you are following. This was interesting! I think it takes wisdom to determine when to go with the flow, and when not to go with the flow. There are times when resistance to an issue increases your suffering, so acceptance is necessary to work through it, and there are other times when you have to stop going with the flow in order for things to change.
